Foxconn to invest $1 billion in Tamil Nadu plant

Foxconn plans to speculate 1 billion to expand a factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, where Taiwanese contract maker Apple will merge the iPhone, two sources said. The move is a component of a quiet and gradual production shift aloof from Apple China, which is moving removed from the trade war between Beijing and Washington and therefore the Coronavirus crisis.

A source near the matter told Reuters news agency: "There could be a strong appeal from Apple to its clients to get rid of a part of the iPhone production from China."

Foxconn said it didn't investigate customer-related matters, while Apple didn't answer requests for comment.

A second source said Foxconn's planned investment within the Sriperumudur plant, where Apple's iPhone XR was built about 50 kilometers west of Chennai, would be held in three years.

Apple's other iPhone models, manufactured by China's Foxconn, are going to be made at some plants, both sources said, adding that the talks haven't been identified privately, and also the details haven't been finalized yet.

Taipei-headquartered Foxconn will add about 1,000 jobs to the Sriperumbudur plant under the plan, a source said. It also operates a separate plant within the southern Indian state of state, where it makes smartphones for China's Xiaomi Corp, among others.

Foxconn chairman Liu Yang-Wei said last month that they might increase investment in India, without elaborating.

Apple accounts for about a simple fraction of smartphone sales in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market, where its valuable iPhones are often seen as a standing symbol.

Making more phones within the country will help Apple avoid import tariffs, which can further increase its price.

Apple assembled several models in Bangalore through Taiwan's Western Corp. Western is additionally set to open a brand new plant, where it plans to make more Apple devices, Reuters reported earlier.

"India's labor is cheaper than China's and therefore the gradual expansion of its supplier base here will enable Apple to use the country as an export hub," said Neil Shah of Counterpoint, a Hong Kong-based technology researcher.

Companies like Foxconn also are working to spice up electronics production in India and last month launched a .. 65 billion domestic..plan, encouraging five global smartphone makers to determine or expand domestic manufacturing.

Expanding Apple's local presence is probably going to pave the way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" campaign to form new jobs.

Last month, the Modi government unveiled the Rs 41,000 crore Production-Link Incentive (PLI) project, which aims to form India a serious manufacturing hub for transportable exports, with a positive response from movable manufacturers. Foxconn and Winston have reportedly applied for the project.

Other major global players in mobile manufacturing, including South Korea's Samsung and Singapore-based Flextronics, are expected to submit their applications for the PLI scheme soon. Also, Indian companies like Lava, Dixon Technologies, and Karbonn have thus far applied for the project.

The companies can apply till July 31 and therefore the selected companies are going to be announced in early August.

Five global and five local agencies are initially selected for the project.

Another Taiwanese manufacturer, Wistron, which only makes for Apple, already features a presence in India at a factory in Bangalore.
